Hans Holbein the Younger – German portraitist

The details of life at the beginning of Holbein are vague, and even the exact year of birth is unknown. However, it is written that he was born in Augsburg, Germany, for a family of painters. His father, Hans Holbein the Elder, painted altarpieces for local churches. The young Hans and Brother Ambrose learned to paint in the studio of his father in 1514 or 1515, the two brothers were sent to work in Basel, where they paint murals, woodcarvings produced impressions and designed stained glass. During this period, Holbein visited Italy to see the works of Italian masters and Lucerne to work with his father in a series of murals for the Council.

Ambrose died tragically Hans in 1519 and took over his studio and joined the painters' guild in Basel and Elsbeth Binsenstock married. She was a widow with a son from his previous marriage. The couple had two other son and two daughters. Holbein is doing well after her marriage, became a citizen of the city and had lots of orders. Some of his famous woodcuts most of this period include illustrations of the German translation of Martin Luther Bible and a series of engravings entitled The Dance of Death. He came to know Erasmus, the famous Dutch humanist, who commissioned Holbein to produce a set of pen and ink illustrations his satirical work, The Praise of Folly. Holbein also painted three portraits of Erasmus.

Around 1525, Switzerland has participated the struggle between factions of the reform and work became scarce. Holbein established in England to try his luck, taking with him two letters of introduction Erasmus action. One letter was addressed to Sir Thomas More, who later became Lord Chancellor. Holbein painted several official portraits of him, showing concern detail and decorative effects later become famous. Holbein was a success in England and stayed there for two years before returning to his wife and children in Basel in 1528 only.

Back in Basel, Holbein was commissioned, but the replica of the reform has made life impossible for painters. religious paintings have been destroyed, Erasmus has been in exile in 1532, Holbein has decided to leave. The abandonment of his family one second time, went out again for England. He would never return.

Many things have changed in London for two years had been absent Holbein Sir Thomas More was at odds with King Henry VIII and would be implemented a year later. Holbein need more sponsors. Word of his exquisite portraits soon became the Court Tudor and in 1536 he was appointed official painter Holbein of Henry VIII. It is believed to have made around 150 portraits of the court. He painted murals and miniature size with charm. Among these works is a life-size portrait of Henry VIII. One characteristic of Holbein was his fascination with textures: jewelry, velvet, embroidery, leather, buttons and plants are all painted with the realism and attention to detail, although critics say that the attention to detail has at the expense of revealing the personality of his subjects. The only portrait in the excitement of their models can see the group portrait unhappy women and their children who had left Basel. Interestingly, in response to realistic portraits, Holbein was also named fashion designer court. He designed the costumes State, buttons, buckles, even the decoration of the coronation of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII, who later would be beheaded.

Holbein painted many portraits of the wife of Henry VIII, after the death of Jane Seymour, third wife of Henry, in 1539, the king sent Holbein to paint portraits of brides eligible. One of the potential bride was Anne of Cleves. Henry, taken by the beauty of Holbein's portrait, has decided to marry. Unfortunately, Portrait of Ana was more beautiful than reality and, disillusioned, divorced Ann Henry in the same year he married.

In 1543, while Holbein was working on a portrait of Henry VIII, the plague struck London and Holbein victim. His will showed he had two children born out of wedlock. Whether possessions, but he left a work which would affect on the English painters of the next generation.
