Cross Stitching Stand
This is a cross stitching, or emboridery question?
Ok, Im working on a cross stitching baby quilt by the company called Janlynn its of a carosle. On it anyways is a stitch I was curious about. Its called an outline stitch, now, heres my question.. Is outline, & stem stitch the same type of stitch? Im not talking about back stitch. Also would outline stitch make it stand out more than a outline stitch?

I always used the backstitch when an outline stitch was called for, but your question made me do some research, and I find several other stitches that at least some people consider to be an outline stitch – ‘stem stitch’ and ‘double running stitch’, plus a stem stitch done with the opposite angle. ‘Double running’ is done differently than a back stitch but looks the same to me, so I would consider them interchangeable. And the two angles of stem stitch seem pretty equal.
I suspect there is no single ‘right’ answer here, and that it comes down to personal taste. Look at the picture of the finished project and decide if you would prefer a more prominent or a more delicate outline. If prominent, use the stem stitch; if delicate, use the back stitch. Remember, it’s your project – do it how you like.
Added to respond to ‘added details’: If the kit is ‘stamped’, I would use the stem stitch. If it’s ‘counted’, I would use the back-stitch. Yes, stem stitch would stand out more than back-stitch. Hope this helps – good luck.
