Buckle Up!

The staple in most everyone’s wardrobe is a pair (or several) of jeans but how many of us are fed up with the ‘run-of-the-mill’ jeans belts featuring the ubiquitous interpretations of the skull and cross bones, eagle head or rhinestone encrusted designs that are commonly found on feature buckles making you look like you are an extra in a Dolly Parton video.

Couple this with the plethora of cheap, badly made belts and it could be a recipe for disaster.

However, with the growth of belt sales having outstripped the growth of bag sales, thankfully, there are now a lot interesting belts to choose from, BUT make sure you invest in a good quality one. And remember that your belt speaks volumes about your own personal style so take the time to get it right.

Here are a few tips on what to look for when buying a belt:

• First thing, check the colour of the hardware (the buckle, studs etc) – if you tend to wear silver jewellery them go for silver hardware; if you wear gold then opt for gold coloured hardware.

• Make sure you buy a genuine leather belt that is lined in leather, nubuck leather or suede.

• Look for good quality leather as this will last for years and will mould itself to your shape making it really comfortable.

• Again, go for quality if buying a coloured leather belt as you need it to be colourfast. The last thing you want is dye rubbing off onto your new J Brand white jeans.

• The edges of the belt should be stitched and not just glued.

• The edges of the belt should be bevelled so that they are smooth and then painted to give a lovely neat finish.

• There should be a maximum of 5 size holes otherwise you could end up with a long flapping end if the belt is buckled on its smallest size hole.

If you are looking for the perfect statement belt for jeans, check out belt brand Opika’s Mala belt in imitation stingray leather with its Kustav Klimt organically inspired silver buckle.
