Cross Stitch Jewelry
Can I do anything with this?
I’m 16 and I’m kinda stressing about the whole college thing. I seriously have no idea what I would want to study in college, I would actually rather not go. I’m really good at crafts and such like crocheting, making jewelry, cross stitching, needle point, and other such things. Could I do anything with this as a future career?
It depends on how much money you want to make. If you are not interested in being rich- or even middle class then sure- you can make money with that. However, there are so many people who can do these things that the marked is inundated with products. Unless you have a stellar skill that sets you far above the experienced crafter, chances are you will not be too successful with this. Just an example–If you consider how many people spend their free time crocheting, most started at a young age and are much older than you (I have 25 years on you already) and the experience and skills they have been able to develop in that time-its a lot to compete with. I consider myself an expert crocheter, a talented tatter and a creative scrapbook er. I do sell quite a bit of product, however it is not enough to support myself. Consider also that there is a high rate of repetitive motion injury with this type of work. That could limit how long you would be able to support yourself.
If you are truly interested it this field as a career, consider designing your own patterns, opening a store or teaching the craft you are best at. If you do decide to design patterns a few courses of graphic design at your community college would be a great benefit. If you truly want to make a living at a craft, find the one you are best at and stick with it. The more you do, the better you will get.
My intention is not to discourage you to do what you love, but give you a realistic view. Hope this helps.
