Cross Needlepoint Patterns

How do you make a visible x-shape in cross stitch?
I am new to cross stitch. So far, my stitches look even, but do not ‘read’ as cross stitches. They look more like needlepoint (half stitch). I have taken two strands, as the pattern calls for. I have threaded the needle, and doubled the thread over, so that 4 strands sew the stitch. Is this right?
I have also double checked my method at about.com, so the back looks neat too.
Thanks!
Thanks Matt. So, it seems that I could keep it doubled in the areas that I want to show as”fill”. Then do it your way with the tail to allow for narrower and more visible stitches, around the edges, for example. Do you ever do yours that way?
Your CB – AD explanation makes sense too.
Thanks.
I have been cross stitching for a while, and this is how I do it. If the pattern calls for two strand stitches, then I thread two strands and leave about 5 inches hanging off the side of the needle. I dont double it over, (like sewing a button).
As for making the X…..if you imagine a square with each corner labeled (the top two corners are A and B, the bottom two corners are C and D)
The first stitch should be CB, and then the crossover stitch should be AD. I do an entire same color section CB, and then I go back and do AD. It makes the back nice and neat.
Always go in the same direction…meaning, CB should always be the first stitch direction.
I hope this is what you were asking!
